Khabalesk Project

This is a Japanese-style clinic located in Babalovsk, a city in the Russian Far East .

The owner is a businessman who imports Japanese sanitary products to Russia, and visits Japan several times a year. Having seen medical facilities in Japan, he wanted to create a facility of similar quality. In keeping with the owner's wishes for a design that was conscious of Japan, the entrance was designed to combine the image of a cutting-edge Japanese medical center with that of a traditional storehouse. The building is a high-rise brick residential building, a type of building that does not exist in earthquake-prone Japan.

The cold Khabarovsk region began with a search for a property that met the owner's wishes

This is a Japanese-style clinic located in Babalovsk, a city in the Russian Far East.

The owner is a businessman who imports Japanese hygiene products to Russia and visits Japan several times a year. After seeing Japanese medical facilities, he wanted to create a facility of the same quality.

In planning this facility, which was planned as a clinic focusing on medical checkups, we visited several buildings to look at tenant spaces. The temperature in Khabarovsk in winter drops to minus 30 degrees. Winter clothing is expected to include heavy fur coats, fur hats, and long boots.

The entrance expresses a Japanese image. Key points of the design

Controlling the light coming in from the first floor is an important point

The only tenant spaces on the lower floors are the canopy and vestibules. The entrance to the tenant spaces is on the first floor, but most of the tenant spaces are underground. Since it is on a slope, there are windows on one side, but it is somehow dim. It is connected to the first floor by a spiral staircase, and the light coming in from the first floor window in the staircase feels brighter. I felt that controlling the light was an important point so that patients could receive their examinations in a relaxed atmosphere.

A tower of light inspired by cherry blossom petals and shoji screens

Inside, long sheets are used to resemble cherry blossom petals, and a tower of light reminiscent of shoji screens was created in the stairwell.

The tower is fitted with a glass light guide panel, which is placed at the center of the staircase that surrounds it, reminding patients that the main room is below. The cherry blossom pattern on the glass sheet gently guides patients. The uniforms are also Japanese-designed and procured in Japan.

A site where Japanese craftsmanship was put to good use and exchanges fostered over the long construction period

The sliding doors and other doors were also manufactured in Japan and shipped by sea. Since hanger-type sliding doors are thought to have had little experience in being installed in Khabarovsk, the installation craftsmen were arranged in Japan and had them participate in the local installation.

During the long construction period, we were able to foster friendships and even take part in local festivals, which are fond memories.
