The First School Building: A symbol of history and tradition
Restoration and renovation projects
The First School Building, a symbol of Tokyo Medical University's history and tradition, is still in use more than 90 years after its construction. This building was a very important key when the university was promoted to a university in 1946. The First School Building, which was destroyed by two fires in the early Showa period, was rebuilt with reinforced concrete during World War II and served as an air raid shelter during the Great Tokyo Air Raid. In addition, microscopes and books were evacuated from the wooden library to escape the war. The First School Building survived the war and saved over 10,000 books, contributing to the facilities required for university promotion. It is no exaggeration to say that Tokyo Medical University owes its existence to the First School Building. We were involved in a project to restore the aging First School Building, a symbol of history and tradition, while preserving its appearance, waterproofing the roof, and repairing the exterior walls.
